In this quote from The Longest Day, Richard Nixon warns his son Richard about the disastrous situation in Vietnam. Nixon knew that Richard would be drafted and sent off to Vietnam as soon as he graduated from college.
Richard had been trying to avoid going overseas but the Vietnam War was going badly and Richard would either have to go or stay at home and risk his chances of being drafted during his senior year. Richard was not a coward but Nixon knew that Richard would go if he put a gun to Richard’s head, so he decided to take a more direct approach. He told Richard that Richard’s high school coach had been killed in action and Richard’s father would have wanted Richard to go instead of bringing home a medal for bravery for Richard or Richard’s girlfriend who was expecting a child soon.
“It will be your last chance to go home, son,†said Nixon. “Your mother will never forgive you if I have to send you over there and abandon her…and me. It will be your last chance to go home.
You got that?†Richard got the message and went over there instead of getting a high school diploma.
